Our previous website update indicated that we would be offering early 2nd MMR vaccine to children aged 16 months to 3.5yrs, if this was the choice of caregivers.
Since posting that update we have received directive from the Canterbury Primary Response Group, asking us to focus our vaccination efforts on the 12 months – 28yr old in our practice that have received zero MMR doses. This is because a single dose of MMR provides 95% protection against measles. Some of our other childhood vaccines offer around 85% protection after a complete course. So 1 dose of MMR is still extremely good protection, and in the current outbreak we have seen very few preschoolers contract measles.
We have a limited MMR supplies in New Zealand, and if MMR cases begin to occur outside Christchurch, MMR will need to be prioritised to those regions also. So we need to be as responsible as we can with the limited doses of MMR we have.
We understand that this information will be distressing to some of you who were very keen to have your preschoolers vaccinated early.
In light of this, we will be offering a limited number of appointments at a clinic on Saturday morning March 16th to those of you who are not reassured by the above statistics. We very much hope many of you will be happy to wait and see if the recommendations change in the coming days and weeks. We have only a limited supply of MMR in stock currently, and will have to close bookings for the Saturday clinic as soon as our supply runs low.
There will be no on-line booking for the Saturday clinic. Please phone reception on Friday 15th March. Our reception and nursing staff are exceptionally busy managing this evolving situation, and we ask for your patience and understanding.
